Much of the debate (or hype) surrounding analytics and big data assumes that economic theory predicts data sharing is an unalloyed public good, an economic win-win for data holders and data subjects. The results from economic research on data sharing and privacy prove far more nuanced than that. Even within a purely “hardcore” economic framework more data and less privacy are not always the best, whether in terms of aggregate or individual welfare.

With the end of US – EU Safe Harbor, what are the alternatives for organizations that previously relied on Safe Harbor? While organizations await clarity about legitimate mechanisms for cross-border transfers between the EU and the US, is preparing for Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs) a legitimate strategy? One advantage of preparing for BCRs is that it allows an organization to stand ready to demonstrate accountability which will help prepare an organization for any legal framework for cross-border data transfer. Additionally, it allows organizations to be able to demonstrate that the organization is doing the right thing with respect to processing personal data.

On November 17th and 18th the Family Online Safety Institute (FOSI) will hold its 9th Annual Conference in Washington, DC.
This year’s event, entitled “Risks. Harms. Rewards”, will focus on the many benefits, opportunities, and challenges our online lives can bring us. Some of the panel topics that will be explored at this year’s event include cyber ethics and cyber-bullying, child online sexual exploitation, privacy, international trends, and digital parenting.

The Conference on Responsible Use of Open Data: Government and the Private Sector, to be held at New York University on November 19-20, 2015 is co-organized by the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology (BCLT) and NYU’s Information Law Institute and Department of Media, Culture and Communication. The event continues and expands the issues addressed by the April 2015 BCLT event Open Data: Addressing Privacy, Security, and Civil Rights Challenges Symposium. We are delighted that Dr. Amen Ra Mashariki, the City of New York Chief Analytics Officer and in charge of the Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics has agreed to open the conference in the afternoon of November 19th.

For November’s Privacy Lab, Mozilla and Disconnect will provide an overview of and invite feedback on Firefox’s newly launched Tracking Protection feature – tracking blocking as a built-in functionality – which uses Disconnect’s blacklist to block requests to known trackers.
The brief presentation and Q&A from 5:15-6pm Pacific will also be available on Air Mozilla. The second hour will be dedicated to informal small group discussions and networking (not recorded).
