What information do we collect?
We may collect both personally identifiable information about you and non-personally identifiable information about your visit when you access our website.
- Personally Identifiable Information: The personally identifiable information we collect includes information you submit to us. For example, if you decide to subscribe to our mailing list, we will ask you to provide us with your name, profession, and e-mail address. If you leave a comment on our blog, we may also collect contact information including your name and e-mail address. Because participation in these activities is completely voluntary, you have a choice whether or not to disclose this information. We may also collect some personally identifiable information through web beacons, as explained further below in the section addressing that technology.
- Non-personally Identifiable Information: The non-personally identifiable information we collect includes the domain name of the site providing you with Internet access, the Internet protocol (IP) address used to connect your computer to the Internet, which is typically controlled by your Internet Service Provider, your company or your university. We may also collect your browser type and version, the operating system your computer is running, and other site visit data such as the pages you view, and/or the information you search for. Much of this information is tracked through log files, which are stored on FPF’s servers (which are hosted by a third party service provider).
How is your information used?
- Personally Identifiable Information: We generally use your personally identifiable information to send you news and updates about FPF or to respond to your comments, feedback, or concerns. We do not sell, rent, or share your personally identifiable information without your consent, except with third parties service providers that operate under our direction, as required by law, or to protect the rights and property of FPF, our website, and other users.
- Mailing Lists: If you submit your personally identifiable information to a mailing list, we will use this information to send you news and information about FPF. We rely on Mailchimp for our newsletters. If you do not wish to receive communications from us, you may e-mail us at [email protected] or, in the case of newsletters, you may click on the link at the bottom of the newsletter e-mail to indicate you do not wish to receive future e-mails.
- Information Posted to Public Forums: FPF allows users to leave comments on our website’s blog. Please remember that any information that is disclosed through this function becomes public information and you should exercise caution when deciding to disclose your personal information.
- Non-personally Identifiable Information: Non-personal information collected about your site visits will be used to allow us to better understand the entire audience that is visiting our site. Except as noted below we track and record IP addresses that access our site for reporting and analysis purposes only. We may use your IP address to help diagnose problems with our servers, gather broad demographic information, and administer our website.
What about cookies and web beacons?
Web beacons, also known as clear gifs and web bugs, allow us to recognize a cookie on your computer when you view a web page. These electronic images help us measure the effectiveness of our e-mail campaigns by, for example, counting the number of individuals who visit our website or the number of individuals who open or act upon an e-mail message. For example, we use Google Analytics to provide us with report about how many unique visitors came to our site, what content they view, and which links they may have clicked on to get here. We use Google Analytics with IP address masking, which ensures that our analytics data does not include your full, individual IP address.

What about “Do Not Track”?
Most browsers offer Do Not Track (DNT) features that let you communicate to websites that you do not wish to be tracked around the web. DNT was designed to limit tracking across different websites and online services, and not data collection from websites you visit directly. Therefore, our data collection and use is outside the scope of a DNT request.
How do we protect your information?
We take reasonable precautions to protect your personal information in our possession from loss, misuse, and unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction. A Transport Layer Security (TLS) encrypted connection is used across fpf.org, which encrypts your information as it travels across the Internet.
For information we automatically collect from site visitors, we limit access to stored data to our technical staff and senior management.
How long do you keep my information?
We collect the minimum amount of personally identifiable information necessary to serve the purposes described above (for example, when you register for our mailing list or for one of our events). We maintain these records only until they are no longer reasonably needed for business purposes. We will also delete your information upon request to [email protected].
