Freedom not Fear, an annual barcamp organised by EDRi member Digitalcourage for European digital rights activists, takes place in Brussels the weekend of 6-9 October 2017. The event takes place at Mundo B in Brussels and is open for everyone – there are no registrations. Participants that extend their stay to visit the European Parliament on 9 October can receive an allowance for their travel and accommodation costs thanks to several Members of the EU Parliament. To receive those travel allowances, registration is required. Registrations are managed by Digitalcourage.
The barcamp highly depends on the participants and their contribution – if you want to organise a workshop or a talk, you can create an account at the FnF wiki and enter your session. (If you have problems with signing up at the wiki, please e‑mail [email protected] for support!)
Some sessions have been proposed already. Here is a selection of what is on offer so far: “Data retention in the EU via ePrivacy – What are Estonia, Bulgaria & Austria up to?”, “Offline tracking: WiFi, face recognition & co.”, “Rhetorics of (governmental) surveillance – how do we convince people that freedom is nicer?”. But there is plenty of room for mor! For more details check the schedule on the wiki.
Registration is open until 22 September at https://aktion.digitalcourage.de/fnf2017, and you can find more details, including the links to the wiki, on the FnF website at https://www.freedomnotfear.org.
Become a GDPR-qualified Data Protection Officer (DPO) through four days of in-person classes encompassing key elements of the IAPP’s European Data Protection and Privacy Program Management training. This class is specifically tailored for US Based companies that manage or monitor the personal information of EU individuals, therefore falling under the requirements of the GDPR and requiring a Data Protection Officer. This course content is based upon the IAPP Certified Information Privacy Professional for Europe (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Privacy Manager (CIPM).
CyberDefenses faculty, in conjunction with the IAPP, with academic and practice experience teaches the essentials of envisioning, designing and executing a comprehensive privacy management program within GDPR requirements. Classes cover pan-European and national data protection laws, key privacy terminology, and the practical concerns around personal data protection and trans-border data flows. They equip you to monitor compliance, manage internal data protection activities, train data processing staff, conduct internal audits, and more.
With the deadline for GDPR compliance looming, companies are searching for DPO candidates with the requisite knowledge and skills. These training programs are based off the body of knowledge for the ANSI/ISO-accredited Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) and Certified Information Privacy Management (CIPM) certifications. CIPP/E and CIPM are recommended as the most appropriate for aspiring DPOs, according to Eric Lachaud in “Should the DPO be certified?” in International Data Privacy Law, a journal published by Oxford University Press.
Your class fee includes vouchers for 2 certification exams – CIPM and CIPP/E.
In this course, the student will learn:
(1) Understand how to build and manage privacy regulations and information privacy teams
(2) Understand the key European protection laws and regulatory concerns.
(3) Understand how to achieve compliance as a US company, concerning EU regulations.

Many privacy advocates argue businesses should have a legal obligation to obtain affirmative consent from consumers before collecting and processing data about them, because they believe such a requirement is necessary to ensure people have full control of their personal information. However, a growing body of research shows that creating “opt-in” instead of “opt-out” policies can have a negative impact on businesses—both raising their costs and limiting how they use data. These effects are then passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices and lower-quality products and services.
Join ITIF for a discussion about this ongoing privacy debate, including the latest research on the economics of privacy, private-sector efforts to provide consumer choice on privacy, and opportunities for policymakers to streamline the digital economy while safeguarding individual privacy and encouraging innovation.
Lunch will be served.
This event will be live-streamed and a recording will be available following the event. Follow @ITIFdc during the event and join the conversation.
