The Privacy and Inference workshop aims at uniting scientists that are currently interested in, and working on solutions to better protect the privacy of both the individuals with the desire to share information online, as well as institutions that actively outsource data and computation to cloud providers. It will hence encompass research advances in all areas of private inference and countermeasures to unwanted inference on personal information.
On September 22, 2015, an international workshop with thought leaders and practitioners will be held in Brussels. The objective of the workshop is to discuss the study results and to develop an agenda for action for the European Commission and (other) national and international policymakers that pursue big data for policy and other data-driven approaches for evidence-informed policymaking.

The main goal of the workshop, and its follow ups, is to jointly define innovative techno-organizational certifications and certification governance models – within some current legislative frameworks – for next generation high-assurance IT services, supply chains, and lawful access schemes. These will assume no trust in anything or anyone critically involved in all critical IT service life-cycle components, from certifications governance to hardware fabrication oversight. They will further assume that highly-skilled state and non-state attackers, with very limited actual liability risk, willing to variously devote tens of M€ to compromise the supply chain.

This half-day conference aims to better define the concept of “privacy crimes,” assess how such crimes are currently being addressed in the criminal justice system, and explore how society might better respond to them—through new laws, different enforcement practices, education, and other strategies. The conference will bring together a variety of stakeholders, including prosecutors, defense attorneys, judges, academics, and victims’ advocates to discuss three main questions:
- What is a ‘Privacy Crime’?
- What’s Being Done to Enforce Laws Addressing Privacy Crimes?
- How Should We Balance Privacy Interests in the Criminal Justice System?
