1st European Summer School on Technical Standards and the Law @ Netherlands
Jul 17 – Jul 26 all-day
1st European Summer School on Technical Standards and the Law @ Netherlands | Tilburg | Noord-Brabant | Netherlands
Technical standards are used daily by businesses, industries, authorities and individuals. Implementing standards may provide businesses and industries advantages over their competitors. For instance, Android and IOS are standardized platforms. Standards may also benefit individuals, as they provide transparency on the methods, processes and quality management of businesses.

Standards are developed for a range of topics such as information security, product safety, social responsibility, privacy, cloud computing and drones. For those who want to understand limitations and possibilities of emerging technologies in our techno-driven society, the understanding of dynamics of technical standardization and its complex legal aspects is highly relevant.

This course will start with an introduction to the world of standards, standards-setting processes and governance. In-depth analyses of various legal issues will follow, such as standard-essential patents, copyright protection of technical standards and data privacy standards. The course will include both frontal teaching and interactive teaching. Students will participate in case studies and working sessions in groups. Part of the program is a field trip, during which students will discuss with experts working in the field of standardization.

The main focus of the course is on the European legal and policy approach towards technical standardization, but international standardization will also be discussed, such as ISO (International Organization for Standardisation) and W3C (World Wide Web Consortium). The lectures will be provided by the course leaders and guest lecturers from academia and practice.

SPMED Workshop – Real-World Security and Privacy for Collaborative Medical Analytic @ Darmstadt
Jul 18 – Jul 19 all-day
SPMED Workshop - Real-World Security and Privacy for Collaborative Medical Analytic @ Darmstadt | Darmstadt | Hessen | Germany

Workshop Focus

Rapid advances in technology have recently brought the analytics of shared data close to practical, even if the amounts of data are large and the security and privacy requirements stringent.  In particular for fields with highly sensitive data such as genomics or other health domains, the wide range of privacy-preserving analytics technologies promise to enable new and exciting applications and scientific breakthroughs.

Though for real-world use, there remain still open questions on necessary and sufficient levels of privacy, regulatory and legal compliance, public acceptance and end-user usability of privacy-preserving algorithms to just name a few.

Workshop Goals

  • To take a step back to compare and contrast recent advances in medical analytics.
  • To bring stakeholders from Medicine, Law, and Technology together to get a better understanding of the full range of requirements, capabilities, and constraints.
  • Discuss the current state of technology and to identify remaining technical and non-technical hurdles for public adaption.
  • To identify promising directions for further research and real-world validation approaches.

The workshop will not publish proceedings: The goal is to share and summarize progress and insights so far in a conference report that will be published. Furthermore, speakers will be free to publish their talks and any accompanying material online.

Trans-Atlantic data flows: The view from Europe @ Washington, DC
Jul 19 @ 12:30 pm – 1:30 pm
Trans-Atlantic data flows: The view from Europe @ Washington, DC | Washington | District of Columbia | United States

The U.S.-EU Privacy Shield framework, the agreement between the U.S. government and the European Commission that enables continued flows of commercial data from Europe to the United States, is undergoing its first annual review by the Commission and other European institutions. In the U.S., the Trump administration has affirmed support for the framework and its essential pillars, while simultaneously pursuing foreign policies and privacy policies that cause alarm to some Europeans. What will be the outcome of the EU Commission’s review, scheduled to be completed by September, and how will the actions of the Trump administration affect the future of data transfers?

On July 19, Governance Studies at Brookings will host a leading member of the European Parliament on privacy and data protections issues, Jan Philipp Albrecht, to discuss views of the Privacy Shield and consumer data privacy more broadly. How well has the Privacy Shield functioned since it was adopted in July 2016? How might other geopolitical events impact the future of trans-Atlantic data transfers? And what emerging threats pose the greatest risk to data protection in the EU and U.S.?

After the session, speakers will take audience questions. You can follow the conversation on Twitter using #DataProtection.

The Dark Side of Digitalization: Fraud, Surveillance, Sousveillance, Disinformation, Privacy Loss and Cyber Extremism @ Darmstadt
Jul 21 all-day
The Dark Side of Digitalization: Fraud, Surveillance, Sousveillance, Disinformation, Privacy Loss and Cyber Extremism @ Darmstadt | Darmstadt | Hessen | Germany

This workshop addresses various topics and implications related to the transformation of society through digitalization. Over the span of a short time, the world gained vast access to mobile devices, applications, different social networks and cloud services that require more and more connectivity. Computing systems and digitalization are becoming more pervasive and essential to every facet of our lives.

Despite the increasing comfort and efficiency provided through digitalization, this development has a dark side. Our computer systems increasingly store and process sensitive data. They have become attractive targets of various attacks in the promise land of Internet of Everything: They create new levels of monitoring for collecting user profiles, mass surveillance but also sousveillance through users themselves. With the rising number of users, social networks are becoming anti-social. They are used by terrorists and extremists as platforms for hate messages and incitement, by state actors for propaganda and disinformation, and by criminals for fraud. Our society is still in the middle of understanding the magnitude of digitalization and its effects, while the opportunities of new technologies and negative effects are still expanding at the same time.

In this workshop researchers, experts and practitioners will focus on the impact patterns of the above mentioned consequences through current examples as well as a critical assessment and evaluation of debated solutions.
